Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

How does CBT work?

CBT is a talking therapy based on scientific methods. After medication it is the most effective treatment for reducing the symptoms of almost all mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression.

CBT can help you to stop negative cycles of thoughts, behaviour and emotions by helping you to notice what is making you feel anxious, unhappy or frightened and helping you to manage these factors. By helping you to work out what to change to improve your mood, CBT can allow you to take control of your mental health.

What conditions are treated with CBT?

It can tackle a range of problems including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorderpost-traumatic stress and schizophrenia. The therapy takes place in a series of clearly structured sessions with a therapist. Unlike most traditional talking therapies, CBT sessions focus on current problems and practical solutions rather than problems from your past.

Treatment is usually short-term and for a set length of time.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR

(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. If you cut your hand, your body works to heal the wound.  If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.

EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes.  The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.

If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.

Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes

Psychotherapy

My Psychotherapy is based upon my experience of working in a multidisiplinary team. My psychotherapy subsequently encompasses many different aspects deemed to be important in the holistic mental health treatment of children and young people. However this also transfers to the treatment of adults as I use a developmental model that encompasses the life stages from cot to tombstone.

My experience  consists of 25 years working in psychiatry, with 15 years based within Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (CAMHS).  I  have a Masters Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and I am a trained EMDR Therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
